Fmr. Jaguar David Garrard Signs With Dolphins

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With Miami out of the running in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, the Dolphins wasted no time in signing free agent quarterback David Garrard, according to Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer.

On Monday, Glazer tweeted out, "Just got a text from David Garrard telling me he's now a Miami Dolphin." Garrard also tweeted, "It's official guys I'm a Miami dolphin!!! Couldn't be happier!!!"

Garrard said he expects to compete for the starting job with incumbent Matt Moore and perhaps another quarterback the Dolphins acquire.

The Dolphins signed the former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Monday after their failed courtships with Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn. They also hosted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith for a visit Sunday and may still consider signing him.

Flynn went on to sign with the Seattle Seahawks.

Garrard spent nine years with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Miami wanted to sign Garrard in October after losing Chad Henne for the season to a shoulder injury. Garrard declined, the speculation at the being that he "didn't feel like playing." Turns out he needed surgery on a herniated disc, according to CBS Sports.

Miami safety YeremiahBell was told he'll be released to create cap space, a person familiar with the discussions said. The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn't announced a move.

By cutting the 34-year-old Bell, the Dolphins save more than $4 million in cap space, which could be used in negotiations with Alex Smith.

Bell has played his entire eight-year career with Miami and became a starter in 2006. He made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and led the team in tackles each of the past four seasons.
