UF & FSU Given Wide Latitude To Raise Tuition
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Florida House of Representatives has approved a plan to give Florida's two major research universities, the University of Florida and Florida State University, wide power to raise tuition.
The House, in a 85-28 vote, will allow both schools to raise tuition above the current maximum yearly hike of 15 percent.
Supporters said the new bill, HB 7129, will give the schools a better ability to compete with other top universities in the country. Opponents said it would place too much of a financial burden on already taxed students.
The legislation would also allow any university that meets certain requirements to ask the Board of Governors to raise tuition above the current cap and schools could also set different rates for different majors.
Governor Rick Scott has asked the tuition be kept flat for the coming year.
