Most Popular Dog Breeds In Miami

NEW YORK (CBSMiami)– Look out Lab, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has announced that the Beagle has overtaken the beloved Yorkshire Terrier to become the third most popular dog breed in the U.S.

While the Labrador Retriever remains the most popular dog in America for the 21st straight year for its playfulness and loyalty, it's the German Shepherd that's tops in Miami.

Nationally, the German Shepherd steadfastly held onto its No. 2 spot, according to the AKC top 10 list released Tuesday.

The Beagle has nosed into third place. AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said the "spunky breed" wins hearts with its "merry personality."

The Rottweiler made news by unseating the Shih Tzu which had been in the top 10 since 2000.

Here's the entire national list.

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Beagle
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Yorkshire Terrier
  6. Bulldog
  7. Boxer
  8. Poodle
  9. Dachshund
  10.  Rottweiler

The Rottweiler has always been a favorite in Miami. The breed remained third most popular locally last year, while finally breaking into the top 10 nationally. The Golden Retriever jumped three spots to enjoy the Miami sun last year. However, their ninth place rank locally pales in comparison to the number four position they hold nationally. Once again, the Dachshund just missed Miami's top 10, landing in 11th place.

"For the fifth year in a row, the German Shepherd ranks number one in Miami," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "The Labrador Retriever ranks fourth most popular, for the third consecutive year, making Miami one of the few cities without the Lab in its top spot."
