MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins are now just a little over a month away from opening their brand new ballpark and when it does open, it’s going to have some serious star power for the opening night festivities.
“36 days from right now we will be preparing for opening night,” said Marlins President David Samson at a Wednesday morning news conference to announce some of the exciting pomp and circumstance being set for what the Marlins organization is calling an incredible opening night.
“There was one person who we wanted to try and reach out to, who simply signifies Miami, understands Miami, he is Miami, he’s not Mr. Marlin but he is Mr. Miami,” said Samson.
That man is 19-time Grammy award winning producer Emilio Estefan who will produce the Marlins Park inaugural Opening Night festivities with a unique theme song called “Marlins Tonight.”
“It’s definitely going to be historic, all the way from K.C. and the Bee Gees, the music is going to be great, there’s going to be so many things happening in the stadium,” said Estefan.
Estefan said the entire stadium, all 37-thousand seats, will take part playing percussion.
“There’s going to be a lot of emotional moments, we’re going to do something very innovative with the technology, and I think it’s going to be very fulfilling to put together this program,” said Estefan.
It’s a moment in Marlins history that Estefan said he hopes will be the start of unifying our community through music and baseball.
“This is all about starting new traditions and this song, to have Emilio pen a song, is just something we never thought we could do,” said Samson.
The stadium is 97-percent complete.
Opening night is April 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals. The game is sold-out but if you purchase a ten-game opening night package, you can still score a seat.
