Sports Agenda for Tuesday (2/28/12)

Big Story:
Tough night in sports as all of South Florida's major teams were off last night. Still, the Canes got their football schedule; the Rams have the number 2 draft pick up for auction; D-Wade is freaking awesome for breaking Kobe's nose; and Daytona goes up in flames…almost Darwin…almost!
Today's lyrics of the day….
"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation take me home?"

Hurricanes Football:
Well they got the schedule Monday afternoon and got the shaft in the process.
They open on the road in conference play and have only one meaningful game at home in September. (sorry Bethune-cookman)
It's especially brutal as the Canes go on the road to play Ga. Tech, home for NC State, and at Notre Dame in consecutive weeks.
Plus they get N. Carolina at home and welcome in Florida State.
Yikes.
Just glancing at their schedule here's what I see.
Win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, loss, loss, loss, win, win, loss.
So we're looking at 5-7 to 6-6.
Now that can change depending on what I see out of North carolian, Virginia, and NC State early.
I'm just basing it on last year's records from their opponents.
It's gonna be a tough year for UM, but they should still manage to claw their way to a bowl game this year.

NFL Draft Update:
Well, to no one's surprise, the bidding is open on the St. Louis Rams' number two overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The Rams are going to auction the pick to the highest bidder who wants Robert Griffin III.
My gut tells me it may end up being the Washington Redskins.
Whoever picks him, will be getting the best pure athlete at the quarterback position in years.
Imagine Michael Vick, except right out of college he can throw the football accurately and is a quarterback, not just a running back who could throw.
That's what RGIII is.
Maybe I'm a homer for him since I used to pull for the Big XII.
But, I also recognize talent when I see it and he is easily coachable and develops every year.
It's gonna cost a lot to get him I know that.
Rumor is they want an Eli Manning type deal.
For those that don't remember, before the 2004 NFL Draft, the Giants traded two number 1 picks, a number 3 pick, and a number 5 pick for Eli Manning.
I'd say that worked out pretty well.
I'd make the same trade for RGIII in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, I think the team has zeroed in on acquiring Peyton Manning, who lives down here.
I see him trying to make a comeback next year with the Fins and RGIII heading to Cleveland or Washington.
St. Louis will then use the bounty of picks to quickly rebuild their roster.
It'll be fun to watch, but St. Louis has to be careful. They have to make sure at least two teams are after RGIII to make the auction work.
Of course after running a 4.40 40-yard dash at the notoriously slow combine track, I'd say it's safe to say plenty of teams will be after RGIII.

NBA Update:
Just a quick note on D-Wade breaking Kobe's nose.
I loved it.
Sorry Lakers fans.
But here's how dumb ESPNers are and how dumb fans who hate LeBron are.
On the one hand, they say LeBron shrinked away from the big shot in a big game by not taking the last shot in the All-Star game. Then, they say the All-Star game doesn't matter and Wade shouldn't have fouled Kobe so hard.
You can't have it both ways guys.
(h/t to Ethan Skolnick for the analysis)

Daytona 500:
Well, if you missed the ending, yknow what, you didn't miss anything.
It was auto racing and as many people say, the only fun part is when they turn right.
There was an interesting moment when a car slammed into some jet fuel on the track and went boom.
Other than that, you missed a bunch of guys going in circles and Danica Patrick being 62 laps down at one point.
Dick Trickle didn't race. (Man I miss him as a NASCAR driver)
Just something to think about….
How many thousands of gallons of gas are used at NASCAR events each and every week.
Combine that with the gas used at Indy car events and I'm guessing you will have hundreds of thousands of gallons of gas.
Don't you think we could use that gas a little better some other way?
Just a thought.
