Police Identify Woman Killed Crossing I-595

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a woman who was hit by multiple vehicles as she tried cross I-595.

According to FHP officials, at least three cars struck the Beatrice Stewart, 62, of Miami,  as she tried to cross the westbound lanes of I-595 near University Drive in Davie around 9:15 p.m. Thursday night.

Troopers said it was unclear why the woman tried to cross the busy highway.

"At this time, we're still investigating. We do have three vehicles that remained on scene, but we do believe she was struck by several other vehicles also. At this time, we don't have a description of those vehicles. Once we speak to witnesses and the other drivers, we hope to get a little more information on the other vehicles," said Sgt. Wysocky.

The westbound lanes were closed for hours during the accident investigation with traffic detoured to State Road 84 near the Davie Road exit and then back onto westbound I-595, he said.

Investigators are asking for any witnesses to come forward.
