Man Receives Life Sentence For 2006 Stabbing Death

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A self-described act of jealousy has ended up with a Broward County man being sentenced to life in prison.

Alfredo Oliveira, 40, was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a teenager to death in 2006. Oliveria, a Brazilian native, pled guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Jackline De Melo, a high school student he lived with briefly.

De Melo's sister spoke to the judge Friday about the family's pain since the murder. Jackline was stabbed 32 times after Oliveira saw her with another man.

The judge in the case gave Oliveira gave him the maximum sentence in exchange for his plead to second-degree murder.

"It was extremely difficult for me, but I had to do it for my family to let our voice be heard," Aline De Melo, Jackline's sister said. "I was hoping the judge would follow her instinct and she did. She gave him life."

Last month, Oliveira apologized to the De Melo family and said he is now a changed man.
