Mysterious Beach Object Identified

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) - The mysterious object in the water which prompted evacuations at John U. Lloyd State Park Thursday afternoon is a harmless training device.

Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technicians determined the cylindrical object is no threat to surrounding areas and will be removed and towed away.

The device, with a cable or a tether attached, was found shortly after 1 p.m. and reported to the Coast Guard, which then contacted the Broward Sheriff's Office.

As the Coast Guard worked to keep boaters away from the object, BSO closed the state park beach on the off chance the object packed an explosive punch.

No homes were evacuated.

Those who spend time on the beach say it's not unusual to find what appears to me torpedo or bomb-shaped items float ashore. The Navy is believed to use dummy devices offshore of South Florida for training purposes.
