Documents Say Ex-Senator Dawson Ready For Tax Evasion Plea

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A former Florida senator accused of federal tax evasion is apparently ready to plead guilty in the case, according to documents filed with federal court Monday. According to the agreement, all that's left is working out when she would surrender, and how much she owes the IRS.

Mandy Dawson represented parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties in the Florida House and Senate until 2008. She was arrested in July, after the IRS claimed she didn't file tax returns for 2 years while she was in office.

Dawson, a Democrat, has been living in the Daytona Beach area. She is represented by a federal public defender, who filed the request. The attorney said Dawson is undergoing medical care, has transportation problems, and would like time to work through those issues.

Dawson was snared during the investigation which led to the indictment of Alan Mendelsohn, an eye doctor charged with political corruption.
