Divers Search Hollywood Lake After Human Skull Found

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – Police divers in Hollywood are searching a lake for the possibility of more human remains after a human skull was discovered over the weekend.

Two teens discovered the skull while swimming in Oakwood Lake on Saturday, Hollywood Police Lt. Diana Pereira said.

"I was like, 'What is this?'," said Matthew Dickens who found the skull. "I never saw a human skull before."

The lake where the skull was found is located in the area of 56th Avenue and Douglas Street near the Emerald Hills Golf Course.

According to the mother of one of the teens, they were in the water trying to clean up some of the garbage and debris in the water when they made the disturbing find.

"They were swimming around the lake. They found a shopping cart and they removed the shopping cart. They went back searching around and they found a clay vase and brought it up and started dumping out the dirt and sticks and everything else and out rolled a skull," described Brandy Fischer.

Fischer said she knew it was a human skull because she is a medical technician and she knew it wasn't fake. She immediately called 911.

Hollywood Police took the skull to the medical examiner's office, which confirmed that it was a human's skull.

At that point, police began searching the lake for additional evidence.

"Right now, we are waiting on a forensic anthropologist to determine race, gender, and age of the person the skull belongs to," said Lt. Pereira.

For the families of the two teens who found the skull, they hope it may ease some family's pain.

"Somebody's mother, brother, or sister, may be able to rest now," said Brandy Fischer, mother of one of the boys who found the skull.

"I feel bad for the family," said Matthew. "The skull was small, it may be a kid."
