PTA Treasurer Charged With Grand Theft

MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – A Miramar woman has been charged with Grand Theft after she allegedly stole nearly $33 thousand from a school's Parent Teacher Association.

According to her arrest affidavit, 40-year old Janet Gamory stole $32,859.35 in cash money from the Silver Lakes Elementary School's Parent Teacher Student Association. As treasurer for the PTA, police say Gamory stole the money over a 15 month period from July 2010 through August 2011.

According to her arrest affidavit, board members would give money made during school events to Gamory, which never made it into the PTSA account held at Chase Bank. During this period of time Gamory would attend the monthly board meetings and provide false documentation to show the Chase account had higher balances that were in fact actually there.

Gamory would also present the board with fictitious reports she had created using a software program known as "moneyminder", according to the arrest report.  The actual Chase Bank statements were always given directly to Gamory and never opened by anyone else other than herself.

Last September, after board members noticed their account seemed low they confronted Gamory.

According to the report, Gamory admitted to several of the board members that the account balance was low because she had taken the money for her own use. She also showed them the fabricated spreadsheet she used to hide the theft.

Gamory was arrested last Friday and bonded out of jail the same day.
