Suspicious Package In Front Of Courthouse Blown Up

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Streets around the federal courthouse in downtown Miami were closed to traffic and pedestrians alike for several hours Tuesday morning after a suspicious package was found.

Miami police spokesman Detective Willie Moreno said the bomb squad was called to check out the package which was placed or left in front of the sign for Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. United States Courthouse at the corner of NW 1st Avenue and 3rd Street.

Chopper4 over the scene spotted what looked like a black garbage bag sitting in front the sign with a piece of white paper tied to its top.  Around 11:15 a.m. the bomb squad, using a robot, placed and explosive under the bag and blew it up.

Turns out it was nothing more than a garbage bag stuffed with - garbage.

The courthouse is located in downtown Miami between NW 3rd and 5th Streets on North Miami Avenue. It is across from the Metrorail Station, Government Center.
