Gene Hackman Injured In Keys Accident

FLORIDA KEYS (CBSMiami) – Legendary actor Gene Hackman was injured in a bike accident Friday afternoon and was airlifted from the Keys to a local trauma center after he was hit by a car.

According to Sgt. Tom Pikul with the Florida Highway Patrol, Hackman was riding his bike in the Florida Keys near mile marker 88 when he was hit by a car.

The 81-year-old actor was thrown from the bike and suffered body and leg injuries, according to FHP.

Hackman was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, but his publicist says that's only because of how far he was from the hospital, not because the injuries were serious.

CBS4's Gio Benitez went down to Islamorada to speak with the woman who police say hit Hackman. The 60-year-old woman, Kathryn Rodriguez, told Benitez she had "no comment at this time," but thanked Benitez for visiting her.

According to Sgt. Pikul, information is still coming in from investigators in the Keys, but no video of the accident currently has been found.

Investigators did take pictures, but they are not going to be released.

According to TMZ, Hackman's rep told TMZ that the 81-year-old Academy Award winning actor was released from the hospital.

Hackman's rep told TMZ that Hackman, "suffered bumps and bruises after a woman bumped him from behind in her vehicle."
