Senate Approves Claim For Man Injured By BSO Deputy
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) – One of the first bills passed in the Florida Senate at the start of the 2012 legislative session was one that would provide a $10.75 million settlement with Eric Brody, who was injured in a car accident with a Broward Sheriff's deputy.
The Senate voted 37-2 to approve the claim.
Nearly 14 years ago, a BSO deputy crossed two lanes of traffic at nearly twice the speed limit and slammed in 18-year old Brody's car. The accident left Brody confined to a wheelchair and his family has spent the past several years looking for financial help for his medical care.
The Senate also voted 39-1 to award $1.35 million to William Dillon who spent 27 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of a murder in Brevard County.
Both bills were championed by Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island who also pushed claims for the men in 2011, but the measures failed to pass the House during the final chaotic hours of the legislative session.
