Study: Affluent, White Women Dominate Coupon Use

MIAMI (CBS4)- With the new year almost here, everyone is looking to start fresh and start saving money, and more and more people are using coupons for added savings. But according to a new study, the socioeconomic group using coupons more may surprise you.

For Gail Spencer, clipping coupons has become a habit. The South Florida woman spends her Sundays clipping away.

"I get this vicarious thrill from seeing how much money I save every week," said Spencer.

The savings are worth a couple hours worth of work Spencer said.

"Sometimes the cashier will go, you saved $75. You get a pat on the back for grocery shopping," said Spencer to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

A new survey, by the University of Arizona's Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences shows more affluent white women want that pat on the back at the grocery store.

Affluent white women are most likely to use six or more coupons in a single shopping trip, the study found. Seventy-eight percent of frequent coupon-users were white. Twenty-four percent of them reported an annual household income of at least $75,000.

"I can say they are using them more. They are asking me hints and asking me where you get all these coupons," said Spencer who gets her coupons from the paper and store circulars. She categorizes them and yes has some advice if you want to start saving.

There are many ways to save. First off, learn how to combine or stack coupons, search on line at websites like Coupons.com, Smartsource.com and all the various coupon groups on facebook.

Spencer who has a lot of coupons doesn't mind a little busy work on a Sunday morning.

"Not at all…you save a bunch of money," said Spencer.
