South Floridians Wait In Long Lines For New Air Jordans

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Sports fans and shoe fanatics who were looking to cross one more item off their wish list packed into South Florida malls early Friday morning for the new Air Jordan Retro 11 Concord.

Some folks lined up Thursday night to make sure they could get a pair of the 180-dollar shoes when they went on sale.

Analysts believe Nike produced up to 500-thousand pairs of the legendary basketball shoes.

The Nike Air Jordan brings in about one billion dollars in sales each year.

While shoppers remained calm in South Florida, the same cannot be said in other parts of the country.

As the doors opened to a mall in Stockton, California, hundreds of people surged toward the door which caused some people to get caught in the crowd and fall. The frantic customers were rushing to shoe stores to buy the new Air Jordans. There was a rumor some stores may not have enough pairs for everyone who wanted to buy them.

In Seattle, police reportedly used pepper spray to break up fights among shoe buyers who pushed and shoved outside a Seattle area mall.

There were unruly shoppers in Georgia as well. Police arrested folks for breaking down the door of a Georgia store before it opened and also arrested a woman for leaving her two toddlers in her car while she went inside to get a pair of the shoes.

While the shoes cost $180, they are selling on the internet for $400.
