BOCA RATON (CBSMiami) – One person suffered minor injuries early Friday morning after a car plunged into a murky South Florida canal.

According to the Boca Raton Fire Rescue Department, a car was located in a canal at 400 West Camino Gardens Boulevard around 5:45 a.m.

When fire rescue crews arrived, the black Dodge Challenger was halfway submerged in the water with its side up against a sea wall.

The passenger, Damian Cousant, was treated on the scene but refused to be hospitalized. He told police he wasn’t sure if the driver made it out.

Police divers searched the water for the driver but didn’t find anybody.

More than two hours later, the driver Tyler Hanley, was located a short distance away attempting to hide from officers. He refused to cooperate with investigators and was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash resulting in damage to the vehicle and property and for failing to give information and render aid.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
