Miami Woman Out Of Hospital After Apt. Landing Collapse

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A section of a Miami apartment building has been declared 'unfit for occupancy' after two people fell through a second floor landing.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, a man and woman were on the wooden landing of the building in the 400 block of NE 29th Street Tuesday evening when it gave way beneath them. Both fell about ten feet to the ground below.

Neighbors said they heard the screams of the couple as they fell and rushed their aid. The woman,  who neighbors identified as Tanya Benavides, suffered a broken ankle; she was released from the hospital on crutches.  Her husband,  Rene Cerrato, remains hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital with back pain.

Wednesday afternoon Miami building inspector Rey Benitez declared the upstairs unit off-limits because of the condition of the landing leading to it.
