"Operational Issues" Delay Bahamas Express Ferry

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There's been a slight delay for the company planning to run a high-speed ferry service between Port Everglades and Freeport in the Bahamas.

The first trip was supposed to launch Friday but was delayed due to issues with "operational issues" according to Bahamas Express. The company did say the ferry is scheduled to depart on Saturday.

The ferry service, run by the Spanish shipping company Balearia, will make the trip to Freeport in about 2 ½ hours in calm seas.

The ferry will operate daily, except for Wednesdays.

Fares start at $90 for first-class and $49 for economy, one way. Kids age 6 and under travel for free.

The ferry is a 225-foot long, aluminum-hulled catamaran dubbed Pinar del Rio. It has the capacity to hold 463 passengers. It departs from Terminal 1 at Port Everglades at 10:00 a.m. and arrives at 12:30 p.m. On the return trip, it departs Freeport Harbour at 7:30 p.m. arriving at Port Everglades at 10:00 p.m.

The ferry service to Freeport fills a void left behind when Discovery Cruise Lines went out of business in October.
