Marlins Won't Help City Pay Taxes On Ball Park Garages

MIAMI (CBS4) – It's a swing and a miss for the City of Miami in their efforts to get the Miami Marlins to help pay taxes on their new stadium's parking garages.

Last week city leaders met with Marlins president David Samson to ask if the organization would chip in to help pay for the $1.2 million property taxes which may be levied on four garages near the stadium, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Samson reportedly said no but did offer free legal advice to the city as it prepares to make its case to the county's property appraiser who suggested last month that the new garages may not be tax exempt.

According to the Miami Herald, to be exempt from property taxes, municipal property must be used only for municipal purposes.

County officials have told the city that no decision had been made, but there's little they could do to help Miami.

The city will reportedly ask the county for a property tax exemption because the garages support a public stadium and will be owned and operated by a municipal government.
