MIAMI (CBS4) — A Miami family made a plea for help Friday in order to find the person who shot and killed a 16-year-old boy and bring that person to justice.

The family of 16-year-old Jacquil Owens said he loved to cook and even helped prepare their Thanksgiving meal. But two days later, on Saturday Nov. 26th, he was gunned down and no one seems to know why.

“My baby didn’t deserve this, he really didn’t,” said Jacqueline Owens, Jacquil’s mother.

Jacqueline Owens still doesn’t know what happened to her son, only that someone shot her son in the back of the head as he walked down 61st Street.

“No child deserves that.  If anything I rather my child bury me.  I don’t want to have to bury my child for something that you know is senseless,” said Jacqueline.

Owens was in the hospital for five days, unconscious, before he died.

His family said he didn’t run with the wrong crowd which makes this even harder to understand.

“He not the type to run the street, toting guns, no he wasn’t that type of child,” said Jacqueline.

The Liberty Square area has seen a spat of shootings in recent years.

“I know it happens over there but I didn’t expect it for my child,” said Jacqueline.

Other family members said they want help from the community to help solve this senseless murder.

“Life is too precious to be lost at the age of 16.  Something needs to be done.  Somebody knows something, Somebody saw something, heard something.  Ya’ll know,” said Jacquil’s stepmother April Hall.

The lead detective admitted they don’t have much to go on and they’ll need someone to step forward to solve it.

“We need to get as much information as we can. I know the community and there’s a lot people out there who probably saw what happened so please come forward,” said Det. John Rusinque.

If you do you know anything about the murder of Jacquil Owens, please call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers. You can do it anonymously and you may be eligible for a reward. Just call (305) 471-TIPS.
