Holiday Season

MIAMI (CBS4)- It’s not Central Park or Rockefeller Center, but those at the InterContinental Miami Hotel in downtown Miami say their outdoor ice rink may even be better.

The hotel’s holiday ice rink is near Biscayne Bay on the hotel’s outdoor Bayview Patio at 100 Chopin Plaza in downtown Miami. Robert Hill, general manager at the hotel, said it’s perfect for this time of the season.

“Just bring a little bit of the winter from the north right here to South Florida and create that holiday spirit,” he said.

Opening night is Thursday night and the hotel invites the community to take advantage of the winter fun with a beautiful bay view.

“It’s in the 50s so it feels a bit winterish right now, but even on a warm day, the ice is still going to be good here, perfect to skate on, so coming out with the family is going to be a lot of fun,” Hill said.

Speaking of families, this year the InterContinental got into the giving spirit. They adopted six families for the holidays through Neighbors 4 Neighbors.

“Every Saturday, we’ll have a different family here that we’ll adopt and give them that opportunity to have a great family holiday,” Hill said.

Giving back is an important part of the holiday spirit at the hotel, Hill said.

“We have over 450 employees that live as well as work in this community so it’s important for us to give back to our community and it really creates that family spirit that we want to create at the hotel and not just another business in the city,” he said.

Hill said he hopes the spirit of giving is a holiday tradition.

“Hopefully, you know, this will be a tradition for many families going forward and hopefully this becomes a great holiday tradition,” he said.

The ice rink will be open from Thursday, December 1, 2011 to Sunday, January 15, 2012; seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $20 an hour for adults and $10 an hour for children and young adults under 18-years-old. Purchase price includes ice skate rental and special–rate validated parking.
