Florida May Force Job Re-training To Get Unemployment Benefits

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) - Florida has been steadily nibbling away at unemployment benefits, including reducing the number of weeks most people receive. Now, the state may force you to be trained for a new career to get the benefits you earned when you lost the old one.

The proposal will be taken up next week by a the Florida House business and consumer affairs subcommittee. As proposed, the bill would require some people to accept free job-retraining to get unemployment benefits, which top out at about $250 per week.

The proposal focuses on people who test low on job-skill testing.

Under the proposed law, the state would also do a little re-packaging in the unemployment program. It renames the Florida Unemployment Compensation Law the Reemployment Assistance Program in an apparent refocus and re-branding of agency efforts.
