Turkey Day Travel Packs Airports, Highways

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Thousands of people are expected to hit the highways and airways to visit family or friends for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

"It's too warm down here for Thanksgiving, we're look forward to some cooler weather, seeing the relatives and spending a nice day tomorrow," Barbara St. Aubin told CBS4's Ted Scouten as she prepared to hop a flight at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

About 70,000 travelers are expected to pass through the airport each day over the holiday. Miami-International Airport is expecting even larger crowds, about 105,000 per day over the holiday period. Many are grateful that a cold front which moved across the northeast hasn't fouled up the weather too much so that vacations and big dinners can go on as planned.

"The plan is to eat lots of food and enjoy the sun and heat," said Sierra Harp.

At South Florida's airports the real crowds are expected over the weekend. Not only will people be returning from out-of-town trips but about 95,000 cruise ship passengers will coming and going on cruises.  Twenty ships will be steaming in and out of Port Everglades and the Port of Miami over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

About 42.5 million people are expected to drive, fly or ride trains over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to AAA, which makes it the highest number since the start of the recession.
