Bicyclist Hit & Killed By Pembroke Pines Police Detective

DAVIE (CBSMiami) - Davie Police are trying to determine how a bicyclist was hit and killed by am on-duty Pembroke Pines detective in an unmarked police cruiser Monday night.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes near Stirling Road and NW 66 Avenue around 9:15 p.m.

Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle said the bicyclist, a 37 year old male, was killed on the scene. The accident did not happen in a crosswalk, and it appears the bicyclist veered into traffic just before the crash.

Police say the bicyclist had beer cans on him and are working to determine if alcohol played a factor. At least one witness claimed the cruiser was speeding.

The stayed on the scene and is being questioned by authorities.

The identity of the detective has not been released.
