Sheriff' Deputy Fires On Purse Snatching Suspect In Lauderdale Lakes
LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBSMiami) – A Broward Sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting Sunday morning in Lauderdale Lakes.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal said the deputy was called to check out reports of a purse snatching at a BP gas station on Oakland Park Boulevard around 9 a.m. The owner of a black Honda said she was inside the station paying for gas when she noticed a man trying to break into her car. That man was later identified as 20-year old Joe Toney.
The woman said she ran outside, but when she approached Toney, he stole her purse and took off on foot.
A description of him man was put out over the police radio and a deputy spotted him in the 3800 block of NW 29th Street. As the officers approached, Toney got into a struggling match, according to Leljedal, and the deputy fired on him – wounding Toney in the shoulder.
He was taken to Broward General Medical Center for treatment.
Toney was wanted on a Violation of Probation warrant and will now face additional charges.
