"Flagler's Rusty Spike" Wins Keys Cocktail Contest

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) - Raise your glass to a new Keys drink commemorating a local landmark.

Keys resident and student Joshua Zajac, 22, won top honors Thursday night for his concoction of "Flagler's Rusty Spike," a cocktail created to honor the upcoming 100th anniversary of the completion of Henry Flagler's Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad.

Zajac mixed equal amounts of apple cider, Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps and Laird's Applejack brandy. He sprinkled in brown cinnamon sugar to symbolize rust and added a cinnamon stick for the spike.

He won $100 at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce's 30th Annual Cook-Off, featuring professional and amateur chefs vying for honors in various categories.

Zajac said his creation's inspiration came from drinking warm apple cider during cold days growing up in New Jersey, before becoming a Keys resident.

The railroad's centennial anniversary is Jan. 22, 2012.
