Tri-Rail Re-open After Fiery Car Collision

OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) – Tri-Rail trains are back on schedule Monday after a collision between a train and a car shut service down and left several passengers injured.

A northbound Tri-Rail train slammed into a vehicle on the CSX railroad tracks at Commercial Boulevard just west of I-95 around 7:00 p.m. Sunday. Three people in the car managed to escape before impact.

Ten people aboard the train were hurt.

Fort Lauderdale Public Information Officer Matt Little said the car had become stuck on the tracks as the Tri-Rail train approached. The train couldn't stop in time and struck the vehicle which caused the car to explode.

Little said firefighters found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, but quickly put the fire out.

Ten people on the train were hurt, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue, and were taken to Holy Cross Hospital and Broward General Medical Center.

One person had significant injuries, while most were just slightly hurt.
