St. Petersburg Times To Change Name Come Jan. 1

ST. PETERSBURG (CBSMiami) - Florida's largest newspaper is getting a name change makeover.

Starting Jan. 1, The Saint Petersburg Times will be changing its 120-year-old name to the Tampa Bay Times.

According to Chairman and CEO Paul Tash, the new name reflects the growth of the newspaper beyond Southern Pinellas County and their vision for the region.

"Our name no longer fits the newspaper or the audience we serve. Three-fourths of St. Petersburg Times readers live outside St. Petersburg," said Tash.

The Times adopted the new name from their daily tabloid, which will continue to be known by its initials, tbt*.The new name does not signal any change in coverage or ownership but instead is meant to send a "welcoming signal" to readers outside of Tampa.

As an eight time Pulitzer Prize winner, The St. Petersburg Times has built a national reputation among readers and the media community.
