Frantic 911 Calls Reflect Terror From Tornado

SUNRISE, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – It's been just a week since a tornado tore through parts of Sunrise and Plantation. As residents continue to pick the pieces, the frantic 911 calls from residents show just how scary the situation was for them.

"The house across the street completely collapsed," one frantic homeowner told a dispatcher. "There's a man who lives there. My husband went to help him. Please come."

The house the caller described was in the New Orleans Estates neighborhood where one third of the homes were damaged or deemed unlivable. The house had a 70 year old resident; fortunately he was not seriously hurt.

"We had a tornado or something hit us," another caller said. "My neighbor is caved inside. Something hit him in the head. And they knocked the trees right off, oh my God!"

Another victim who lives in a Sawgrass development told a dispatcher, "Our house shook. My back hurt because the window bubbled. I ran into the closet with my husband."

More than 100 homes were left with tornado damage in Sunrise and Plantation.

John and Jean Navarette, who live in New Orleans Estates, said hearing the tornado was utter terror.

"We held each other for dear life. She said we're gonna die," said John Navarette.

"It's emotional to know what all your neighbors are going through but we're thankful, no one was killed," Jean Navarette said.
