"A Bagel And A Bone" Finds Dogs Good Homes

MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) - A South Florida girl is using her social media skills to help animals find new homes.

Ari Grosfeld is 12 years old. Her family adopted a dog from Miami-Dade Animal Services and she wants to encourage other families to do the same. As part of her Mitzvah project, Ari and her mom started an organization called "A Bagel and A Bone". They're applying for not-for profit status, but Ari's already getting her message out the way kids her age know best.

"All the kids, they're all just on the internet 24-7, so it's so much easier to get the word out through the internet," Ari explained.

Her organization already has a Facebook page where she posts pictures of some of the dogs up for adoption at the shelter. She's encouraged other kids to share photos and information about shelter dogs online.

"You can go and blog about and Facebook and everything about these dogs that desperately need homes," she said.

Sunday morning, "A Bagel and A Bone" hosted a breakfast to raise awareness about pet adoptions. Ten puppies and an adult dog found permanent homes during the event.

Miami Dade Animal Services' Volunteer Coordinator Melissa Sorokin said she was thrilled Ari wanted to help.

"We don't have money for public relations and PR so this thing done for us is like a miracle," said Sorokin.

The shelter will also start a junior volunteer program for kids ages 9-15. They can't work directly with the animals, but they can help the shelter by raising awareness online.
