Fugitive Connecticut Minister Sought In South Florida

MIAMI (CBS4)- Police in Connecticut need help to find a man wanted for sexually assaulting a child. The suspect is a former minister and police believe he may be in South Florida.

40 year old Juan Mayorga is wanted on charges of first degree sexual assault, third degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. Police say Mayorga left Connecticut when he learned he was under investigation. Police say they traced him first to Guatemala and then to Miami. Mayorga has family in South Florida and police believe he is likely still here.

"All fingers seem to point toward the Miami-Dade area, so we're going to try to intensify our search there," explained Detective Sgt. Robert Nesci of the Meriden, Connecticut Police Department.

Investigators said Mayorga is a former minister at a church near New Haven, Connecticut and they're concerned he could be working at a church in South Florida.

"If he's out evangelizing to people where he is with young people or could be viewed as a role model or what have you, they are at risk," said Det. Sgt. Nesci, adding, " People may not even know that and my fear is there could be another victim."

The detective also had a message for Mayorga: "He's a minister. If he was truly believing the words he was evangelizing, come back, come to my office. I will teat you with respect. Let's go through the legal system. Let him have his day in court. Please come in. Turn yourself in. Do the right thing."

Anyone who has information about Juan Mayorga is asked to call local police.
