Mom Helped Cop Son Flee Country To Escape Drug Charges

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) – A Coral Springs woman has admitted to helping her police officer son escape to Brazil in order to avoid federal drug charges.

On Monday, 51-year old Janiber Vieira pleaded guilty to conspiracy in helping former Boynton Beach officer David Britto flee the country. The maximum potential sentence is five years behind bars.

Sentencing is set for November.

Britto cut off an electronic ankle monitor and flew to Brazil with his mother’s help before his trial was to begin last month. Britto has pleaded not guilty to involvement in methamphetamine trafficking.

A former Marine, Britto was Boynton Beach’s officer of the year in 2010.

Britto & Vieira are evil – providing drugs to our children.

    They should stay in Brazil.

Adults should be able to make their own decisions on these so-called drugs.

Kids (?), they’re another thing all together. That’s why they can’t go into a 7-Eleven and buy beer and cigarettes, they can only get Hershey bars, sodas, and ‘chips.

I never heard the part where he was (they were?) providing – drugs – to our children. I need some science on that one, Cassandra.

No science, no statment should be made.

Having said that, I’m okay with them staying in Brazil; I’m not a big fan of the place or the general mentality of the country.

It’s still mired in the third world.

@ Chucky I agree with you. Also, normally I wouldn’t say this but I actually feel bad for both him & his mom. I mean its the same question that I always ask myself what in someones life drives them to have to resort to things like this?… I mean when people are very poor they often resort to things that most of us find unspeakable but in his case its worse in the way that he must have worked so hard to attain all he had, but now it is all gone and then some, either due to greed or this terrible economy where people will do anything to survive. Also, as far as the mother goes its sad that she is paying as most mother’s I think will defend their children even in cases worse then this. I mean if he were a killer I would not defend him, but in my opinion what he did was more of a bad choice for him then a dirty deed for our society.
