N4N, Salon Raising Money For Miami Woman Injured In Bali

COCONUT GROVE (CBS4) - It's an average work day at M Salon in Coconut Grove. But more than just haircuts, these stylists are working for a miracle for their co-worker Zena Freidman.

Zena left for a vacation to Bali with her sister and after an accident hasn't been able to return.

"Last day on vacation she's ready to go home and this tragedy occurs, a hit and run," explained her long time client and friend Michael Newman. Newman and his family have been clients of Zena's for more than 30 years. "We want to get her back here because we feel she can get the best care here in the states."

Hit, and run over by a taxi cab,  leaving Zena to fight for her life in a foreign country.

"She has 11 crushed ribs, a broken shoulder, a broken collar bone, they had to take out her spleen, and she has a collapsed lung a head concussion and they just did a shoulder replacement surgery," her boss and friend, Michael Carrato, owner of M Salon in Coconut Grove.

Without travel insurance to medevac her, co-workers, clients and friends have come together to pay for her medical care abroad.

"She's stuck in Bali and they air lifted her to Malaysia, but it's like 130 thousand dollars to get her back to the states," explained Carrato.

Other stylists open their chairs to Zena's clients, donating the cost of a cut to her medical fund, so far they've been pretty successful.

"[So far we raised] 33 thousand dollars," said Carrato.

But there's more than 100 thousand dollars to go – a goal they're optimistic about reaching for their friend.

"Anything I can do for Zena, she's been there for me in times I've needed her so I'm happy to help her out," said Newman, adding, "we want to get her back here because we feel she can get the best care here in the states."

To help bring Zena Friedman, make a donation to the Neighbors 4 Neighbors Family Fund by calling 305-597-4404 or visiting this web site. Make sure to designate "Family Fund" as the program and put "Zena Freidman" in the "on behalf of" field.
