Broward Health Unveils Mammo-palooza Madness

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Mammo-palooza has returned to South Florida in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

From October 10th – 15th, Broward Health is hosting the third annual Mammo-palooza with a week of fun-filled activities especially designed for women.

This year, Mammo-palooza hopes to not only screen more than 13-hundred women for breast cancer, but the weeklong event will also include the brand new AmeriBreasts exhibit, the world's only colorful, interactive walk-through tour of the human breast. There are also raffle prizes, food, mini-spa treatments and more. Those who have a mammogram will also receive a special gift.

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer, and so it is important for all women to get timely mammograms.

In 2011, the American Cancer Society estimates that 230,480 women and 2,140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

"As a surgical oncologist, I cannot stress enough the importance of being screened for breast cancer.  Mammograms are imperative to catching the disease early.  To have an event like MAMMO-PALOOZA, which brings awareness to breast cancer and provides an opportunity for women to be tested, is very special for our community," said Dr. Nicholas Tranakas, Broward General Medical Center's medical director for cancer services.

"Early detection and awareness is the cornerstone of MAMMO-PALOOZA and the Broward Health mission," said Frank Nask, President/CEO of Broward Health.  "This screening program can prevent more serious illness and even save the lives of our community members."
