Stylists Adding A Touch Of Pink To Hair Styles

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – For most people, heading to the salon and walking out with some pink in your hair might be a nightmare.

But for some hair stylists, they are adding a touch of pink to everyone's lives by donating their time to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

"I am a breast cancer survivor five years coming up," said stylist Phyllis Utter to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

Utter and other stylists at Salon 46 in Hollywood are donating their time to put in pink extensions to anyone's hair. The money raised from this month long charity event will go to fight breast cancer.

"It hits every market. Young people love it. They bring moms in and their little sisters in," said Utter.

The money raised will go to Gilda's Club, a home in Broward County where people can go to get support during their struggle with all forms of cancer. It is named after comedienne Gilda Radner who fought Ovarian Cancer.

"Anything that is fun and spreads awareness we are in," said Elizabeth Wynter from Gilda's Club.

The project, called Hair Because We Care, is donating money to a cause, but it is also spreading the word about breast cancer.

"Their colleagues, their friends and their families say, 'what is it with the Pink Hair Extensions,' so people know about breast cancer and get their screenings and catch it early," said Wynter.

That is the goal with this project which is meant to do more than make women look pretty in pink.

"I want to see pink hair very where all over Hollywood," said Wynter.

The extensions are $20 and all the money goes to Gilda's Club in Broward County.
