FHP: Miami-Dade Officer Arrested On DUI Charge After Crash

MIAMI (CBS4) – An off-duty Miami-Dade police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law after he was arrested on a DUI charge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Officer Johnnie Ray Crawford, 34, was involved in a car accident at the intersection of SW 107th Avenue and Kendall Drive around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 6th, according to FHP trooper Joe Sanchez.

Sanchez said Crawford rear-ended a woman while driving his personal car. Nobody was hurt in the collision.

Sanchez said Crawford refused a breathalyzer test. Records show he was arrested and taken to the Dade County Jail, but has since been released.

Crawford has been suspended with pay until formal charges are filed. Once that happens, he'll be suspended without pay, according to Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland.

Rutland added Crawford, who has been on the Miami-Dade police force for more than three years, has several commendations in his file including a Citizen Advisory Committee Officer of the Month award in November 2010.
