First Day On The Job For Broward's New Schools Chief

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Wednesday is the first day on the job for the new Broward School Superintendent Robert Runcie.

Tuesday, the Broward School Board approved a contract for the new Superintendent who will lead the nation's 6th largest school district.

Runcie, who left the Chicago, Illinois school system was offered, and accepted, a three-year deal with a base salary of $275,000 a year, according to The Sun Sentinel. He'll have access to a district car and receive health insurance for himself and his family. However, the board removed a $900 a month car allowance and a $500 a month business expense allowance.

He will receive up to $20,000 to relocate from Chicago.

Runcie, a former chief of staff to the Chicago Board of Education, was chosen for the job in September from a field of more than 40 applicants.

Runcie already has public speaking events planned in order to meet the community. He'll speak at a community forum scheduled for 7p.m. Thursday at Plantation High School, 6901 NW 16th St. The forum, sponsored by the district's new Parent/Community Involvement Task Force, is the first of three being held to encourage parents and community leaders to get involved in their local schools.

Runcie replaces Jim Notter who retired in June. Notter earned $299,425 a year, plus a $900 monthly car allowance and a $500 monthly expense allowance. He also had family health insurance. But Notter gave up some of those perks, including the car allowance, when the economy soured.
