MIA Moves To One-Price Parking, Ends Short Term Fees

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you travel from Miami International Airport, or park to meet passengers there, you know it had always been far more expensive to use short term parking. That's done, but at the cost of a small increase in the airport's daily parking rates.

Short Term Parking had cost up to $30 daily, while longer term parking in an airport garage topped out at $15 daily. As of Saturday, MIA had raised the garage parking rate $2 to a maximum of $17 for 24 hours, and eliminated the extra charge for short term parking altogether. Now, wherever you park on airport property, you will pay $2 for 20 minutes, reaching the max at just under 3 hours.

Airport officials say this is the first rate increase at MIA in approximately five years.

"With the opening of new terminal facilities for international arrival passengers, all 8,059 of our parking spaces are now considered premium parking spaces depending on your airline," said MIA's Miguel Southwell in a statement.  "The rates have therefore been simplified to reflect this change."

If you don't want to worry about finding a parking space, MIA does offer valet parking, but charges a dollar more than the 24 hour rate for up to 3 hours, and $30 for a full day. Off-site parking is available for about half MIA's new onsite charges.
