Miami Student Struck By Truck Walking To School

MIAMI (CBS4) – A Jackson Senior High student was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after she was hit by a truck as she walked to school.

Miami Police spokesman Napier Velazquez said 18-year old Valerie Alvarez and her brother were walking along 36th Street when they decided to cross the street at NW 18th Avenue. The driver of the truck, who had the green light, reportedly told police he did not see the girl because it was very dark. He said he felt a thump and immediately stopped. When he got out and saw Alvarez on the ground he called 911 and stayed there until police arrived.

Alvarez was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her brother, who was walking in front of her, was not hurt.
