Hurricane Katia Accelerates As It Moves Away From U.S.Coast

MIAMI (CBS4) – Hurricane Katia has picked up speed and size as it crosses over the northeast Atlantic.

At 11 p.m. the center of the storm was about 725 miles north-northeast of Bermuda. It was moving to the north at 46 mph.

Maximum sustained winds were 85 mph making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Hurricane force winds extend 70 miles from Katia's center; tropical storm force winds extend outward 255 miles. Further weakening is expected within the next 48 hours as Katia moves over cooler waters.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued for Bermuda.

Large swells generated by Katia will continue to affect most of the eastern seaboard of the U.S., Bermuda and the east facing beaches of the Bahamas for the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life threatening surf and rip currents.
