Security Questioned At School After 10-Year-Old Leaves Campus

MIAMI (CBS4) – A ten-year old boy whose disappearance led to a wide-scale search when he walked away from his school is now calling into question security procedures at the school even after the boy was found safe.

According to Miami-Dade School Police spokesman Sgt. Ivan Silva, Jose DeArmas was last seen leaving Silver Bluff Elementary School, located at 2609 SW 25th Avenue, headed southbound around 11:30 a.m.

Police launched an on-campus and off-campus search for him.

Shortly before 1:00 p.m., DeArmas was located at 106 Ponce de Leon Boulevard near a Publix Supermarket.

"He walked out of school. He wanted to go to the mall, found a bike, ended up at a supermarket getting food, that's where they found him," said J.C. Quinones, a father of five who talked to DeArmas' parents

DeArmas has since be reunited with his parents.

Miami-Dade School police have not commented on how the ten-year-old was able to walk away without anyone noticing.

"This shouldn't happen," said Quinones. "That's what my tax dollars are paid for, my kids to be safe."

"I'm very concerned," said parent Louis Teherra. "I've had to come here a couple of times. I don't see anyone around here. I don't see a security guard, anyone can come in.

CBS4's Silva Harapetian asked the Miami-Dade Schools police for a comment, but as of Friday evening, the only response has been that police are investigating the incident.
