Broward Teachers To Get $500 Cash Bonus

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) -- There's some good news for teachers in Broward County. Teachers have reached a contract with the school district, granting instructors a $500 cash bonus and no unpaid furlough days.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the one-time bonuses will cost the district about $7 million but the contract will help secure $30 million in federal funding from the Race to the Top grant.

Palm Beach schools reached a similar agreement in June.

New legislation requires states to create merit-pay plans. Florida is receiving $400 million in Race to the Top funds, which could help districts pay for it. But without a contract, Broward could have lost its $30 million share.
