Shalala Breaks Silence Over UM Allegations

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – University of Miami president Donna Shalala has come under fire as the scandal surrounding former booster, and convicted Ponzi schemer, Nevin Shapiro continues to grow.

Shalala had recently told ESPN Magazine that the school was monitoring the sidelines on game days for suspicious guests. Still, the scandal happened under her watch as president of UM. Wednesday afternoon, Shalala finally broke her silence.

"As a member of the University family, I am upset, disheartened, and saddened by the recent allegations leveled against some current and past student-athletes and members of our Athletic Department," Shalala said in a statement.

"Make no mistake – I regard these allegations with the utmost of seriousness and understand the concern of so many of you," Shalala wrote. "We will vigorously pursue the truth, where that path may lead, and I have insisted upon complete, honest, and transparent cooperation with the NCAA from our staff and students."

Shalala was responding to the charges leveled in a CBS4 interview and a Yahoo! Sports story against the Canes.
