N4N: Homestead School Get The Supplies They Need

HOMESTEAD (CBS4) - School may be out of session, but Gateway K-8 Center in Homestead makes sure parents are a part of the education process throughout the year.

"We have resources; we have two computers where they can come and apply for a job or they can apply for Florida's Kids Care, insurance, food stamps; different things," explained Marjorie Murillo, the school's Community Liaison Specialist.

Murillo runs the Family Resource Center at the school.

"In our school we have 86% of the students that are on free or reduced lunch. That's why we are a title 1 school," said Murillo.

And parents really appreciate the extra support.

"Parenting isn't something that comes with a rule book, or a set of instructions, and this way I know of resources that I can take advantage of to help my son," explained Kori Moore who has two sons that are students at Gateway.

The Family Resource Center makes sure students and parents alike have the tools they need, and with the school year about to start, Murillo is focused on finding school supplies.

"It's not a secret the problems that we have with the budget, and a lot of parents will not be able to buy absolutely anything," said Murillo.

It's a real fear that many parents face.

"You don't want your child to be the one that comes to school, and to not have everything they need," said Moore.

Murillo and several parents approached local businesses for help, but they haven't had any luck.

So Murillo tried to get in touch with Neighbors 4 Neighbors.

"I know that Neighbors 4 Neighbors always do good things for people and the community, so that's why I got in touch with them," said Murillo. "My goal is to have our 1,460 students all ready, that is very important to us."

With just two weeks until school starts, they're hopeful to reach their goal.

"It's very important because if you donate one, one item, it's always helpful for one children," explained parent, Julie Burgos.

Anyone who would like to make a donation and help Gateway get ready for the new school year can call Neighbors 4 Neighbors at (305) – 597-4404 or Click Here to donate online.
