Bail Denied For Muslim Cleric, Sons In Taliban Case

MIAMI (CBS4)-An elderly Muslim cleric and both of his sons will remain in custody until trial on charges of financially supporting the Pakistani Taliban after they were denied bail.

U.S. District Judge Adalberto Jordan this week denied bail for 24-year-old Izhar Khan, also a Muslim cleric. Jordan previously rejected bail for 76-year-old Hafiz Khan and 37-year-old Irfan Khan.

All three have pleaded not guilty to terrorism material support charges. Prosecutors say they funneled at least $50,000 to the terrorist group that has attacked U.S. and Pakistani targets. Three other people still in Pakistan are also charged in the case.

Jordan said the evidence against the two younger Khans was less compelling than that against their father. But the judge decided the case was still strong enough to warrant detention.
