Law Enforcement Members Bring Smiles To Ronald McDonald Kids

MIAMI (CBS4)- Children at the Ronald McDonald House in Miami were in for a special treat Friday. That's because members of the Miami Police Department planned a fun filled day for them.

Chief Miguel A. Exposito and several members of his team in blue were on hand at the Ronald McDonald House at 1145 NW 14th Terrence. The event, which began at 10 a.m. and concluded at 2 p.m., offered children the opportunity to spend their time with various members of law enforcement, including members of the police department, SWAT, bomb squad, marine patrol and canine units.

One child in attendance was 11-year-old Albert from Venezuela. He is blind and receiving treatment in Miami. He said he was happy to met the officers and learn what they do first hand.

Exposito said he enjoyed it as well.

"It brings attention to the situation that families have to live with on a daily basis and I think that's really what's important right now," Exposito said.

The children at the facility are undergoing treatment for all sorts of medical issues, but on Friday it was different.

The event featured live music, face painting, food and refreshments as well as demonstrations by various departments.

For parents, it's a big blessing.

"It's a time to forget about all the hard times that we spend with the staff and in the hospital," parent Zoila Sanchez said.

Officer Marcos Perez with the MPD said it's a great experience.

"Oh man. It's the greatest feeling in the world," he said. "My hair's just standing up just thinking about it. Just to look at the eyes of the kids, the excitement, the energy…it makes me feel like a kid again."

Exposito has been recently under fire after Mayor Tomas Regalado asked for the Department of Justice to investigate Exposito's department. He declined to comment on the investigation.
