S. Florida Rep. Helped Arrange Giffords' Vote

MIAMI (CBS4) – A South Florida congresswoman had quite a surprise for her fellow members of the U.S. House as they prepared to vote on a historic debt limit bill.

Democratic National Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said she helped Mark Kelly arrange for his wife Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' return to the House chamber so she could cast her vote.  Giffords voted for the measure which passed 269-161.

Giffords, was shot in the head seven months ago during a public appearance in Tucson, was greeted with a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

"There were a lot of grizzled, hardened hearts over the last few weeks in this debt ceiling fight and they melted when Gabby came in the chamber," said Wasserman Schultz.

Giffords returned to Houston after the vote so she could continue her rehab on Tuesday.

Wasserman Schultz said they are already put wheels in motion in case Giffords decides to run for re-election in 2012.
