MIAMI (CBS4)- It was a good day for the over 800 City of Miami students who received free book bags and supplies Friday.

“I got erasers, and colored pencils and pencils,” one student said.

City officials are making sure their school year is starting off with a home run and a grand slam of a future.

“Education is the best way to procure of any kind of job,” City of Miami commissioner Marc Sarnoff said.

August 22nd is the first official day of the new school year in Miami-Dade, but thanks to all the sponsors the students were prepared Friday even if they’re not ready to get back to work.

“I can take notes when I go to school,” one student said.

“And you’re excited to take notes do homework? CBS4’s Vanessa Borge asked.

“Not homework. Definitely not homework,” the student replied.

Mayor Tomas Regalado, city and county commissioners and City of Miami employees made sure the children most in need in the community went home stress free.

“This is about giving kids the tools necessary. There are some students who are more challenged so this is to help them to be more competitive in school,” Sarnoff said.

It’s really sad with so many kids still not being able to go back to school prepared only chosen ones can. South Florida has alot of families who canot buy supplies or uniforms for their children. Little Havana is one of the poorest communities in Miami and no one seems to remember our children in this section of the world. We count too, our children need help too. Can someone please take the time to care for our children down in Little Havana.
