Moms Sending Packages Of Love, Support To Soldiers

MIAMI (CBS4) - A group of South Florida moms are making sure that every man and woman in the military will get some "TLC" over seas. The kind only a mother knows how to give.

"Moms always know what we need. And these moms knew exactly what we needed to send to these soldiers," Carole Slattery from Adrienne Arsht Center said.

The local organization "America's Moms for Soldiers" spent Wednesday creating care packages to sent to the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"On the average we pack a thousand. We've packed 1700 hundred at one time," said Lauren Ackerman from America's Moms for Soldiers.

The care packages are stuffed with candy, gum, crackers and slim gyms. Hygienic products, shampoo, body wash, toothpaste are also included.

"Q-tips they really need because they clean their weapons with them," Ackerman said.

America's Moms for Soldiers filled 100 care packages with volunteers at the Adrienne Arsht Center. The organization was founded after two mom's visiting their children in the military saw how many men and women didn't have support from home.

"What happens when they're deployed? Do they hear from anybody? And the answer was no," Ackerman said.

Once on America's Mom's for Soldiers list a service man or woman will continue to get a box every month for as long as they are deployed.

"There's no one to fill that void for them if it weren't for our organization, I say that very modestly because we are not the heroes they are" said Ackerman.

America's Mom's for Soldiers are always looking for volunteers…and even dads, brothers, anyone can help pack care packages.
